Answers to our frequently asked questions
What is sandblasting?
Sandblasting is the process of using compressed air or steam to direct a high-pressure stream of abrasives at a particular material, such as concrete or steel, to smooth and clean the surface.
Is sandblasting the same as abrasive blasting?
Yes. Abrasive blasting is commonly referred to as sandblasting, as sand is often used as the abrasive material in blasting applications. Abrasive blasting is not confined to just the use of sand, however. Other blasting materials include steel grit, steel shot, beads, corn cob and walnut shells, and plastic.
What are the benefits of abrasive blasting?
Abrasive blasting removes rust, paint, and other debris from the surface of the metal. The profile created during the blasting process also insures the adhesion of paint or other coatings to the metal substrate. The main benefit of abrasive blasting is that the abrasive media used will not chemically react to the surface being cleaned, reducing the risk of damage to the underlying material. Abrasive blasting also uses eco-friendly materials and is more efficient than chemical cleaning.
What materials do you use for abrasive blasting?
We use a variety of materials depending on what we are blasting. Some projects require an aggressive material for rust and paint removal, while others require a soft fine blasting material for a more delicate finish. The materials we use for abrasive blasting include steel grit, steel shot, beads, corn cob and walnut shells, and plastic. We can use other media if necessary.
What is sandblasting used for?
Sandblasting, also referred to as abrasive blasting, is used to remove - or clean - excess or unwanted materials from the surface of an object. Sandblasting may remove burrs, apply a texture, or prepare a surface for the application of paint or other types of coatings. The advantage of sandblasting is that it keeps the surface intact, while everything else is removed.
What surfaces can you blast?
Abrasive blasting can be used on most any type of metal, both ferrous and non-ferrous.
How long does the blasting process take?
The amount of time the process takes will vary depending on multiple factors, such as the size of the object to be blasted and the media used. Abrasive blasting can take a matter of minutes or several hours depending on the project and quality of blast needed.
Can you come to my site to perform the sandblasting?
No. All work is performed at our Middletown, OH, facility. However, we are located just 5 minutes off of I-75 between Dayton and Cincinnati.
How much does sandblasting cost?
Cost varies by project. Please call or email for a formal quote or estimate.
Do you offer services to non-commercial/industrial customers?
Yes, we also do residential and non-commercial restoration work if it can be brought to our facility. This includes car parts, motorcycle tanks and frames, metal furniture, railings and grates, tractor parts, trailers and dump truck beds and accessories, as well as specialty restoration projects.
What is industrial coating?
Industrial coating is the process of applying different kinds of thick paints meant to protect metal and other materials from rust and corrosion in the harsh environments found in industry, while maintaining an aesthetic appeal.
What specific coatings do you apply?
We specialize in multi-spec paint systems including epoxies, urethanes, zinc, enamels, and specialty coatings by request.
Why is blasting important before surface coating?
It is important to sandblast before painting to remove dirt, contaminants and any corrosion from the surface that may prevent a high-quality, long-lasting paint job. Sandblasting also "scratches" the blasted surface which give you a pure clean surface. This allows the paint to adhere properly for a superb, smooth appearance.
Do you use liquid paints or powder coatings?
We do not do any powder coating or heat cured applications. We spray wet paint by either conventional or airless techniques.
What surface prep is required before applying industrial coating?
The surface will be thoroughly cleaned using abrasive blasting media to remove any old paint, dirt, grease, and rust or corrosion that may hinder the coating process. There are many different standards of blasting. We can follow any SSPC or NACE guidelines, as well as coating manufacturers recommendations or customer specifications, to ensure the surface is properly prepared for painting.
How do I know if I should be using an industrial coating?
Industrial coatings are a broad term for high quality durable paint. An item or material that is vulnerable to corrosion should be coated, as well as any surface that requires protection from fire damage. Industrial coatings are also useful in improving cleanliness of materials in industrial settings. Any material that can rust will need to be protected from the environmental elements. Assessing the purpose of a surface or piece of equipment will help determine whether an industrial coating is necessary. Please feel free to give us a call to discuss the best coating for your specific project.
How long will my coating project take?
The majority of our jobs require only 7-10 days for completion. This will vary depending on several factors, including the amount of surface preparation required, the type of coating used, and number of items to be completed. If you are in a tight spot and need to reach a deadline, please call our main office, and we will do anything we can to accommodate you.
